+Varia Afhaal are thematic gatherings based around the common experiences, everyday technologies and home economics of food preparation. With Varia Afhaal we create a context in which we can collectively develop a deeper understanding of sometimes abstract socio-economic and political topics by learning with and from each other through discussions, sketching, research, cooking and eating.
+
+Following on from Open Sauce at Varia in May 2022, where participants combined the contents of open bottles of sauce to make new, delicious, unoriginal condiments, Chip Shortage or Chips on Demand focuses on the hardware of sauce: vegetable chips.
+
+In Chip Shortage or Chips on Demand we will explore old vs new technologies, scarcity, supply chains and planned obsolescence while experimenting with a variety of ingredients to make and enjoy chips. The discussions and collective cooking/eating sessions will be partially streamed using Varia's own radio streaming infrastructure.
+
+To register interest, please send an email to info@varia.zone with the subject heading [varia-afhaal]. Participants are encouraged to bring ingredients for making chips, and bottles of open sauce from their homes to enjoy them with.
+
+Varia Afhaal is organised by Varia members Alice Strete, Yoana Buzova and Simon Browne.

+Varia Afhaal zijn thematische bijeenkomsten gebaseerd op de gemeenschappelijke ervaringen, alledaagse technologieën en huishoudkunde van voedselbereiding. Met Varia Afhaal creëren we een context waarin we gezamenlijk een dieper begrip ontwikkelen van abstracte sociaal-economische en politieke onderwerpen door met en van elkaar te leren via discussies, schetsen, onderzoek, koken en eten.

+In navolging van Open Sauce bij Varia in mei 2022, een evenement waar deelnemers de inhoud van open flessen saus combineerden om nieuwe, heerlijke, niet-originele sauzen te maken, richt Chip Shortage or Chips on Demand zich op de hardware van de saus: groentefriet.
+
+In Chip Shortage or Chips on Demand verkennen we oude versus nieuwe technologieën, schaarste, toeleveringsketens en geplande veroudering, terwijl we experimenteren met een verscheidenheid aan ingrediënten om friet te maken en ervan te genieten. De discussies en collectieve kook/eetsessies worden deels gestreamd via Varia's eigen radio streaming infrastructuur.

+**Janneke van der Putten** is a vocalist and visual artist based in Rotterdam. Her voice is her main tool, guiding her through physical and sonic explorations in different landscapes. She will present one of her acoustic voice performances as a warming up for her upcoming solo debut album **JNNK**, which will be released on the solstice of June 21st with the Peruvian label **Aloardi** and Dutch art organisation **Idraola**. The album is a retrospective of Janneke’s last decade of voice work, using extended vocal techniques and the natural amplification of the space as an instrument.

+**Toine Horvers** is an artist working with movement, expressed in performances and descriptive writings. At Extratonal Infrastructure he will present the piece **richtingen/kwartet**, a series of polyphonic performances in collaboration with and performed by **Kathrin Wolkowicz, Cora Schmeiser, Janneke van der Putten, Geert van Mil** and **Ieke Trinks**. Works in which Horvers articulates space and time through language and voice. The six works of richtingen/kwartet 'play' with the rigid system of the four cardinal directions (north, east, south, west) with which we indicate locations and movements. At the same time, four performers pronounce the names and descriptions of the four cardinal directions in the relevant directions, like a sculpture that you have to walk around in order to experience it spatially.

During their performance they will get modulated by sound produced by their voice, cables, bodies, a midi device, sonic pi, a microphone, speakers, memories, biases, desires and discomforts. This moment is part of a research process: Looking for the different gender imprints through sound and getting lost.

Op Extratonal Infrastructure presenteert hij het stuk **richtingen/kwartet**, een reeks polyfone performances in samenwerking met en uitgevoerd door **Kathrin Wolkowicz, Cora Schmeiser, Janneke van der Putten, Geert van Mil** en **Ieke Trinks**. Werken waarin hij ruimte en tijd articuleert door middel van taal en stem. De zes werken van richtingen/kwartet 'spelen' met het rigide systeem van de vier windrichtingen (noord, oost, zuid, west) waarmee we locaties en bewegingen aangeven. +In 2012, artist and researcher Olia Lialina wrote the text Still There: Rotterdam's Internet Cafes, about the few then remaining Rotterdam belhuizen. Belhuizen transformed from call shops and internet cafes into Lebara and Lyca branded phone repair stores. What know-how have the store owners developed? What products and specialisations characterise each shop? How do they maintain or create links within diaporic communities? How have these connections evolved as a result of mobile internet usage normalisation?

+Olia Lialina is among the best-known participants in the 1990s net.art scene - an early-days, network-based art pioneer. Her early work had a great impact on recognizing the Internet as a medium for artistic expression and storytelling. This century her continuous and close attention to Internet architecture, "net.language" and  digital vernacular has made her an important voice in contemporary art and new media theory. Lialina is credited with founding one of the earliest web galleries, Art Teleportacia. She is cofounder and keeper of One Terabyte of Kilobyte Age archive and a professor at Merz Akademie in Stuttgart, Germany and a GIF model.

+Olia Lialina is een van de bekendste deelnemenrs aan de net.art-scene van de jaren 90; een vroege netwerkgebaseerde kunstpionier. Haar vroege werk had een grote invloed op de erkenning van internet als een medium voor artistieke expressie en het vertellen van verhalen. In de laatste jaren eeuw is zij vanwege haar voortdurende aandacht voor internetarchitectuur, "net.language" en digitale volkstaal een belangrijke stem geworden in de hedendaagse kunst en nieuwe mediatheorie. +We invite you to "Gardening as Electricity Making," a workshop that celebrates the interplay of soil, electricity, life, and the internet.

+First we will introduce the project ‘Tree-001’, which the workshop is a part of. It is a research project that aims to sync the network infrastructure to the lifecycle of a tree.
+
+The main action will be a hands-on session where we will make mud-cells using soil and water, connect up electrodes to the mud, and measure the gentle current the cells produce with an analog multimeter and an oscilloscope. We’ll try powering an arduino with the cells too.
+
+Then we will have a conversation session altogether about the potentials of soil-generated electricity, and the act of building and maintaining a garden that can power small electronic devices. 
+
+The workshop is co-created by Sunjoo Lee and Timm Donke with Varia, and the project is supported by Stimuleringsfonds. The poster is designed by Seokyung Kim.

+Bring your own soil and containers if you can.
+If not, you can use the soil and containers provided from us.
+The containers can be of any shape and size between about 300 ml to 2 L, should be able to contain watery soil, and should not be conductive. Lid is not necessary.

+We nodigen je uit voor ‘Gardening as Electricity Making', een workshop die het samenspel van aarde, elektriciteit, het leven en het internet viert.
