8th of May
* Varia organisational updates
- We're working on an application for the Professionaliserings subsidy of the Stimuleringsfonds https://stimuleringsfonds.nl/nl/actueel/nieuws/open_oproep_professionalisering_platforms_3/ (Max. €7500 for 4 months outlined professionalisation trajectory, deadline 15th of May).
- - Roel got a PhD position in Malmø, and will move to Sweden in August/September
- - therefore, provoking the moment to rethink/open up what is Varia
- - code of conduct for Varia
- - "mission statement", statutes, bi-laws, etc. with member participation
- - bi-laws/statuten as a tool to reconsider the member status
- - Niek, Manetta and Roel are working on the proposal + a first draft of these documents, which will then be openend up for all members to discuss; in the yearly member meeting we can elect a new board (chairperson, secretary, treasurer "Mistress Of Coin", who are registered as that in the KVK)
- - part of the grant is to have 2 external advisors (administration advice person (force finance)? someone who can advise on bi-laws? and code of conduct (realitygaps, ginger coons)?)
- - 6th of June we know if we are awarded the grant. But also, we need/want to do these things ...
- proposal for a new about text https://pad.vvvvvvaria.org/wg.website (can we take 15 minutes to go over the text and publish it?
- > suggestion to schedule a meeting for this, Cristina will send a mail)
- > luke brain: chance for ep_comments to get feedback on new about !?
- > roel brain: edit inline :o
* Digital Autonomy continued
- Elephant response letter
- how to pursue with the work engaged concretely? (a lot of people were interested in "varia's expertise" and would like to join efforts without being very tech savvy)
- has Constant replied to the email that was sent to them after the workshop? Not by email, but a big thanks was expressed f2f
- next meetings
- - for writing an invitation to other self organised spaces: May 3rd
- - continue writing the response letter with invited self-organisers: Monday 27th of May + Tuesday 4th of June (both between 19:00 - 22:00)
- we use this pad to organise this > https://pad.vvvvvvaria.org/elephant-response
- > hard to meet before perhaps, but it would be good to re-strategise this letter writing initiative.
- > maybe in-between we can chat on xmpp?
- ODD update
- 15-20 July Roel, Julie, Manetta, Silvio, Cristina travel to Bucharest to meet ODD and work together on diggggitaaaaalllll autoooonoooomyyyy
- Relearn
- - public evening event on the Friday, 7th of June (Femke, Jara and Aymeric are each at one table; Varia could have a table as well; prepare some questions on the topic of DA! another table will be on publishing)
- - Who can host Relearn participants during the weekend? (max 20-30 participants?)
- Dennis 1p chill / 2p
- Manetta 1p (but in the middle of living room)
- Luke 1/2p (but must ask first ...)
- Cristina/Roel 2p
- Reinaart (ook.website) ?p
- Giulia 13p guestroom
- Lídia (2p-Eleanor & Charlie - will doublecheck)
- Silvio 1p (if Cristina is kind enough to host him)
- - Who can and would like to help us out on Friday the 7th with different things?
- (end of June: Brussels (rumours), August: Amsterdam (rumours), Sept/Oct: Paris (probably going to happen))
- Varia as a Librehoster?
- https://talk.libreho.st/t/cpp-commitments-policies-and-processes/158
- https://talk.libreho.st/t/code-of-conduct/162
- Concerns:
- What is the scope of Librehosters?
- Varia hosts for members and not general public?
- How to join Librehosters, not as a hosting company?
- Besides getting a vote, opportunity to shape future developments, research and connect with themes of digital autonomy (elephant letter, etc) while being part of a wider support community (different skills)
- list of not specifically hosting members: https://www.autistici.org/, https://ps.lesoiseaux.io/, https://hackerspaces.be/, https://www.privacytools.io/,
- Who are the other not hosting companies (interesting angles from different groups)
- Luke brain: make a thread on talk.libreho.st to ask the questions and stuff
- - In fact, it's already been happening in places and I'll keep pushing it along ...
- "Dear Cultural Initiative, There is a Librehoster in the Room"
* Pushing the Scores update
- still aiming for 31rst may, possibly a few days later
- Christine and Niek will be involved in the event
* Curriculum
- is there a curriculum happening in May?
- It has not been picked up since last meeting ...
- Siiiilllllvvvviiiiooooooooooooooooooooo (do you know you are part of the organisation group? no!)
- the only concrete proposal curriculum related is coming from Simon (wdKA) for next school year
> what do we do with the (non-wdka) curriculum?
> who wants to take this on?
> do we at the park over in the curriculum about to the long of the term timeline?
! we promised 2 curriculum workshops as part of the NOOO2, to cofinance the project.
! so 2 curriculum workshops will happen.
> Data Recovery Workshop / Thomas / Dennis can help
* NOOO2 quick in between
- we delay the project timeline with a month!
- project period: May - August
- june: each of the teams does the documentation work. End of June: main implementation of the work is done. Also this month: the workshops!!!

- - distribusi bootable usb :p
- july: work on the publication starts, Femke joins, collaborative work of putting the publication together, teams are formed for design, editing, etc.
- early August: evaluate and write report.
* ANN + Q
- ANN: StimFonds grant acceptance for Networks Of One's Own proposal (wahheeyyy)
- - the groups could already start individually
- ANN: StimFonds grant acceptance for Floppy Totaal proposal (wahheeyyy)
- ANN: the etherdump is install on the varia server: https://etherdump.vvvvvvaria.org/ changes can be made through the git: https://git.vvvvvvaria.org/varia/etherdump (there is a git-hook active, so all the changes will be auto-updated on the server)
- ANN: We started to experiment with logging in XMPP groupchats: https://vvvvvvaria.org/logs/ using a logbot: https://git.vvvvvvaria.org/varia/logbot
- ANN: Varia (Manetta) will be part of the XPUB audit as "organisation from the professional field", 15 May
- ANN: If somebody wants to design a flag (just in case) (on top of our buidling), we can contact Kamiel Verschuren. There is a budget of €200 fee + €200 flag production costs/flag. < pirate 'artistic' radio/tv station hidden in flag
Yoana: is there a deadline for it an what is it? I talked about making a flag with Angeliki long ago, perhaps we could pick it up. Shall I just ask Kamiel?
- Q: Varia and the rent thing and August and the future (is this too intense!?)
- ANN: there's a TO DO pad!! https://pad.vvvvvvaria.org/todo
* Varia publications after Open Day + Tech Zine Fair, cash moment ;)
* Upgrade
- New beamer (Yes) -- Danny is on the job
- A faster and bigger water boiler - kettle? (Yes) -- Roel is on the job
- fridge for drinks (zwarte vos has one for 35 eur)
* Varia server backup issue
- It's done! No issue :)
- https://vvvvvvaria.org/manual/index_files/server.html (See "Making Backups" and friends)
- https://vvvvvvaria.org/~luke/backuplogs/
- it runs every night at 3am (4 min) and 4am (30 min), during a backup the server is down
- luke brain: to write manual entry with this info
* Possible sandbox server & sudo rights
- - sudo rights (relates to feminist server notes below)
- -- putting a monitor on the server to avoid bitcoinminers,ransomware,etc
- -- introducing people to the
- - would be good to have another server where we can install things freely; one that does not interfere with the Varia main server. nonetheless with some things, sudo access is still necessary:
- -- it can be hard to do work on the library without having rights on the server (we need the presence of Luke, otherwise we cannot restart the server)
- -- or to work on the Varia archive without a sudoer with us
- - can Varia commit/does Varia want to commit to a feminist server? what does this mean? what do we want to do?
- - it would be good to mention the fragility of our infrastructure, when people start to use it. For example, we can add a message in the Etherpad. -> https://pad.vvvvvvaria.org/variapad_introtext Working on the expectations that we shape.
- - we could write a mentioning/statement of our intention to relate to serving and hosting from a feminist perspective
- - we probably will need a private etherpad, all these pads are basically on the street when someone knows the url
- - 2 wifi networks, one public one that can be shared with everyone (Kamiel also has lightboxes for us ;) we could make a WIFI sign lightbox! one for each side)
- - let's share telephone numbers and home addresses as backup networks
-
A Feminist server…..
- – Is a situated technology.
- – It is run for and by a community that cares enough for her/they to exist.
- – It builds on the materiality of software, hardware and the bodies gathered around it.
- – It opens herself/themselves to expose processes, tools, sources, habits, patterns.
- – It knows that networking is actually an awkward, promiscuous and parasitic practice.
- – It is autonomous in the sense that she/they decide for her/they own dependencies.
- – It treats technology as part of a social reality, and finally
- – It takes the risk of exposing her/they insecurity while trying hard not to apologies when she/they sometimes is/are not available.
- Proposal to formally agree this to feminist server practice as Varia
\o/
- lbrain:
- basic user management docs in manual (hwo to add, query, add sudo, etc.)
- add some monitoring to check if the server has a master of coin on it
- hand out some sudo access!
- we could make a members.vvvvvvaria.org subdomain to bring the manual, private etherpad and possible other things together
- we need a new password for the manual ;)
- robots.txt file
