Discussions around digital technologies are often quickly connected to the power ratio between the major technology companies and their users. The influence of the private sector on digital culture is huge and creates a monotone image of start-ups, sci-fi AI future scenarios and problem-solving products. An interest to focus instead on localization, plurality and collectivity have led to the desire to form a collective organization, that builds on a pillars of a network of people in Rotterdam and that could fascilitate participation in debates in a wider network. |

Rotterdam has a strong network of artists, programmers, designers, writers, teachers and enthusiasts at the moment, that use Free Software in their practices and daily life and/or is interested in investigating socio-technological infrastructures. There are different groups and projects running around themes such as self-hosted servers, MediaWiki software, collective learning, DIY culture, network technologies and the change in working conditions. |

Within the Rotterdam panorama we would like to insert ourselves into, there are for example monthly gatherings of the homebrewserver.club: a place for discussion and development of self-hosted services and home servers. Another example is the zine "Immaterial Labor Union", which is published several times a year and filled with articles and comics that reflect on the status of free labor. And recently the two-day festival "Floppy Totaal" took place, bringing music makers and enthousiasts of the floppy subculture together - a type of culture that the USB flash drive or digital folder never managed to do. |

The programs of several educational departments are in a similar way connected to these topics: the master program "Experimental Publishing" of the Piet Zwart Institute examines different forms of "making public" outside the hegemonic world of social media; The department "Hacking (?)" Willem de Kooning Academy ... ...... ; And the research group "Hybrid Publishing" at the same academy explores various forms of hybrid workflows, to study hybridity in a publishing process between online & print and user & developer. |

Digital technology is the central field of investigation for these initiatives, but is always implicitly or explicitly linked to social, economic and political forces. The development of De Samenscholing is also connected to them. The need to initiate a collective organization is both born from a practical desire, to have access to a place to share and organize, but most importantly also grounded in a shared interest in locality, plurality and collectivity. |

De Samenscholing will therefore operate in the city as a social infrastructure for discussion, meetings, collective learning, help and action. In the wider network De Samenscholing wants to establish an international network and to become a hub for exchange, a voice in debates and a resource for resilience. |

De Samenscholing will develop a framework for a public program, that is aimed to invite and speak to a wider network. This public framework consists of thematic sessions (2x per year) and the launch of an article/short publication (4x per year). |
|||
|

De Samenscholing will function on a membership basis: each member can initiate or organize a weekly, monthly or spontaneous session. By creating an open space to initiate, a changing flow of meetings will be organized and being available for participation to other members. The core group will develop and organize the public program and the take the general affairs on their account. At the moment this group is: Lidia, Niek, Roel, Dennis and Manetta; however, this is not a fixed composition. Development of the public program will require different forms of core group, linked to the specific subject and the kind of event. We would like to experiment with a rotating form of the core group, changing in favor of each public activity. |

The De Samenscholing space functions as a working and meeting place where members meet during organized events or accidental encounters; and where non-members are welcome to join. The core group will use the space as a workplace for the development of projects and as a hosting place for organizational meetings. The daily use of space will vary per person from 1 to 4 days a week. |

De Samenscholing will start off with the monthly sessions of the homebrewserver.club, organize a weekly collective MOOC-study program, and start a computer-parts depot. The first public event of De Samenscholing will be a presentation of the article "Have You Considered the alternative?" and will be organized in May 2017. |

Discussies rondom digitale technologieën worden vaak snel in relatie gebracht met de machtsverhouding tussen de grote technologie bedrijven en hun gebruikers. De invloed van de private sector op digitale cultuur is enorm en creëert een monotoon beeld dat bestaat uit start-ups, sci-fi AI toekomst scenario's en probleem-oplossende producten. Verlangens naar lokalisering, meervoudigheid en collectiviteit hebben geleid tot de wens om een collectieve organisatie te starten, bouwend op een netwerk in Rotterdam en fasciliterend voor de deelname aan debatten in een breder netwerk. |

Er is op dit moment een sterke groep kunstenaars, programmeurs, ontwerpers, schrijvers, docenten en enthousiastelingen in Rotterdam die in hun praktijk en dagelijks leven gebruik maken van vrije software en/of geïnteresseerd zijn in het onderzoeken van socio-technologische infrastructuren. Er onstaan groepen en projecten rond thema's als zelfstandig beheerde servers, Mediawiki software, collectief leren, DIY cultuur, netwerk technologieën en de verandering in arbeidscondities. |

Projecten in Rotterdam die aansluiten bij de onderwerpen en mentaliteit waarop we graag willen werken zijn bijvoorbeeld de homebrewserver.club, een plek voor discussie, hulp en ontwikkeling van diensten en servers in eigen beheer en vaak vanuit huis. Een ander voorbeeld is de zine “Free Labour Union”, die meermaals per jaar wordt uitgegeven, waarin met artikelen en strips wordt gereflecteerd op status van vrije/gratis arbeid. En onlangs vond het twee-daagse festival “Floppy Totaal” plaats, waar aan de hand van het opslagmedium werd laten zien hoe de floppy een medium was en is, die een creatieve sub-cultuur creëerde — iets wat een usb-stick of digitaal mapje niet op een vergelijkbare schaal is gelukt. Daarnaast sluiten ook de programma's van verschillende educatieve afdelingen aan op deze thema's: de master opleiding “Experimental Publishing” van het Piet Zwart Instituut onderzoekt verschillende vormen van publiek maken buiten de volop aanwezige wereld van sociale media; diverse "autonomous practices" binnen de Willem de Kooning Academie bestuderen verschillende vormen van het ontwikkelen van een autonome beroepspraktijk binnen het alledaagse; en de onderzoeksgroep “Hybrid Publishing” op dezelfde academie onderzoekt verschillende vormen van hybride publicatie methodes, die een samenwerking aan gaan tussen online & print en gebruiker & ontwikkelaar. |

Digitale technologie is een centraal onderwerp binnen deze verschillende initiatieven, en wordt vaak impliciet of expliciet gekoppeld aan sociale, economische en politieke krachten. Het opzetten van ʬ is daar ook onderdeel van. De behoefte om een collectieve organisatie te starten is ontstaan vanuit zowel een praktisch verlangen, het toegang hebben tot een plek om te kunnen delen en organiseren, maar nog belangrijker is de gedeelde interesse in lokalisering, meervoudigheid, continuiteit en collectief creëeren. |
|||
|
|||
ʬ zal daarom in de stad functioneren als een sociale infrastructuur voor discussie, ontmoetingen, collectief leren, hulp en actie. In een breder netwerk wil ʬ het middelpunt van uitwisseling zijn, een stem in debatten hebben en een bron van weerbaarheid vormen. Als organisatie willen we graag in contact komen met een internationaal netwerk, waarbij we specifiek geinteresserd zijn in het buitenland buiten de culturele steden die al veel aandacht krijgen zoals Berlijn, Londen of Parijs. |

ʬ werkt met een kerngroep en ledenmodel. Deze vorm biedt de mogelijkheid om leden te binden aan de organisatie en deze uit te breiden tot buiten de huidige kerngroep. Deze leden betalen een maandelijkse vaste bijdrage van 20 euro, en kunnen in ruil daarvoor deelnemen aan de activiteiten die worden georganiseerd door mede-leden. Hierdoor kunnen binnen de vereniging verschillende interessegroepen ontstaan. Naast de mogelijkheid van het organiseren van zulke clubavonden, thematische sessies of bijeenkomsten heeft ʬ een vast publiek programma dat gericht is op een breder netwerk. Dit publieke framewerk bestaat uit thematische werksessies (2x per jaar) en een uitgave van een artikel/korte publicatie en een bijbehorende launch (4x per jaar). |

|||
Ieder lid kan een wekelijks, maandelijks of spontaan ontmoetingsmoment initiëren en organiseren. Door aan ieder lid de vrijheid te geven om het initiatief te nemen, ontstaat er een wisselende stroom aan bijeenkomsten in ʬ waar een lid zich bij kan aansluiten. De kerngroep zal het publieke programma organiseren en de algemene zaken voor haar rekening nemen. Deze groep bestaat op dit moment uit Lidia, Niek, Roel, Dennis en Manetta, maar dit is geen vaste samenstelling. De ontwikkeling van het publieke programma zal om verschillende vormen van kerngroep vragen, gekoppeld aan het specifieke onderwerp of vorm van het evenement. Hierdoor willen we experimenteren met een roulerende kerngroep, die per publiek evenement van samenstelling kan wijzigen. |

De ruimte van ʬ functioneert als een werk- en ontmoetingsplek, waar leden elkaar ontmoeten tijdens georganiseerde evenementen of spontane ontmoetingen en niet-leden welkom zijn om aan te sluiten en lid te worden. De kerngroep zal de ruimte gebruiken als werkplek voor het ontwikkelen van projecten en als ontmoetingsplek voor organisatie en overleg momenten. Het dagelijkse gebruik van de ruimte zal variëren per persoon tussen 1 à 4 dagen in de week. |
