Varia Afhaal are thematic gatherings based around the common experiences, everyday technologies and home economics of food preparation. With Varia Afhaal we create a context in which we can collectively develop a deeper understanding of sometimes abstract socio-economic and political topics by learning with and from each other through discussions, sketching, research, cooking and eating.
The second session, STOCK EXCHANGE, will bring up conversations on exchange value, extraction, commodities, economics, self-sufficiency and survival, while exploring the possibilities around making, sharing and storing stock.
What does it mean to extract the essence of food? Which scarcities are pre-existing, and which are created? How is the so-called stock market part of this all?
Extending the value of food scraps and increasing time for work is the ostensible origin of stock, and its popularly marketed form, the stock cube. But is this how it will continue? Is stock making an essential survival technique that we all need to learn, faced with potential agricultural collapse?
To register interest, please send an email to info@varia.zone with the subject heading [varia-afhaal]. Participants are encouraged to bring jars and ingredients for making stock or already-made stock to exchange and sample.
Varia Afhaal is organised by Varia members Alice Strete, Yoana Buzova and Simon Browne.
