*We are honoured to welcome you to our first thematic event of 2024. Every 2 months, under the name 'extratonal special' [the platform for extratonality](https://extratonal.org/) will invite artists and thinkers to investigate particular extratonal themes and subjects in and around Varia. Our first special programme is dedicated to the (dis-)harmonics of waste. Trash is obviously a big problem for our fast-consuming society, but what exactly is our relationship to it? Could it be that in our understanding of it we disregard its transformative compositional and performative potential? With the help of four acts we will delve deeper into the life and harmony of waste. Discover your inner trash!*
**Werner van der Zwan** investigates how a sense of life can be created in the non-living. By animating found objects and giving them a lifeworld he tries to question the dichotomy between subject and object. He does this by morphing the objects into moving bodies using electromotors. In Varia he will present “The Muttering Void”, a music theater piece created together with **Gökay Atabek**, which explores how vacuum cleaners and trash bins can be given a voice and relate to us humans.

**ieke Trinks** mainly makes performances and performative works that are often inspired by consumer-oriented behavior and all the material that comes with it. It includes messing around with things, objects that are everywhere and the constant moving and transporting of all that stuff. The performance during Extratonal is expected to consist of very everyday elements.

**Karel van der Eijk** is an artist who makes installations with sound and mechanics as a central theme. His sculptural works are created from various materials, from wood and steel to skate wheels, clothes pegs, garbage bags and more. You can find his work at exhibitions but also regularly at festivals where he gives performances.
